Dear Young Families:
The NYE PTA is excited to present our eighth One Book/One School event. In this program, our entire school community will read the same book simultaneously and participate in various activities along the way, including a visit with a book illustrator. The program is designed to create a school-wide buzz about books.
The PTA will be providing every family with one copy of the book Rookie of the Year by Phil Bildner. Each student will receive a bookmark. On the back of the bookmark, your child(ren) can check off chapters as they are read. This program will begin on Monday, January 22nd, and run for five weeks. The premise is that the reading will be done at home, as a family, to encourage everyone to read.
Podcasts of Young staff reading the book will be available on the One Book/One School tab on the Young website for all to enjoy.
Summary of the book: Rip and Red, the two main characters, find that fifth grade will be a challenge to them in many ways. There is a new girl named Tiki in class this year. She is funny, charming, and can play basketball! Rip does not know what to do when Tiki shows that she can play sports and make changes for the better at school. Red, Rip’s friend, is struggling too. Soon, they all find out that
sometimes radical change is the right move, on the court, and off.
