Overview of the LMC
What a
privilege it is to be the Library Media Center
Director at Nancy
Young Elementary. Nancy Young herself was a
LMC Director, one who
pioneered our philosophy of reading, technology, and life-long
learning all connected to everyday school life.
Together with the children and
teachers we enjoy this beautiful library, a
place we think of as the heart of our school.
Here are some of the programs that my assistants and I are
responsible for here:
 | Book circulation |
 | Computer lab learning and technology skills |
 | Information Literacy (a cutting-edge research process) |
 | Special reading incentive programs |
 | Book fairs |
 | Book clubs |
 | Accelerated Reader program |
 | Volunteer coordination (we couldn't run this place
without our numerous, wonderful volunteers!) |
 | And more
. |
Our basic policies/philosophies are:
 | All children may have two books checked out at a time
(kindergartners start with one) |
 | We don't stamp due dates, but the computer tells the kids after two
weeks that their book is "overdue." We encourage renewals because we want the
children to have their books as long as they need them, and we aren't concerned with exact
dates. There are no fines. |
 | Children are encouraged to visit the LMC as often as they need new
reading material, not just once a week |
 | Our main hope is that young people LOVE reading and libraries; we
strive to make their visits here positive experiences every time |
I'm always happy to discuss books and reading with you, please feel
free to visit any time. And thanks for all that you do to support reading and learning in
your home. READ ALOUD to your children often and at all ages, it's a great way to help
ensure their school success!
