The Monarch Book Award is given to the author whose book receives the most votes from young readers in Illinois. "The name Monarch was chosen because of its familiarity to K-3 children and to symbolize the growth, change and freedom that becoming a reader brings. The Monarch is designed to encourage children to read critically and become familiar with children's books, authors and illustrators." (Illinois School Library Media Association)
The Kindergarten - 3rd grade students select and read titles from the list. In the fall, students are introduced to the books through booktalks provided by Mrs. Loughran, the LMC Director. The books from the master list are available for check out in the Fry LMC. Students are required to read or hear a minimum of five titles to be eligible to vote in February. The winning book will be announced in March.
